Why Your Alarm System Should Be Part of Your Hurricane Preparations

Governor Rick Scott has officially declared a State of Emergency for Florida in anticipation of Hurricane Matthew, which is expected to hit parts of the state as early as Thursday evening.

If you were living in Florida in the early 1990s, there's no doubt that you remember the tremendous devastation that Hurricane Andrew brought. Weather forecasters are predicting that the destruction that Hurricane Matthew could bring to Florida could closely rival Hurricane Andrew.

Why Your Alarm System Should Be Part of Your Hurricane Preparations

At J&J Security, we feel that it's our duty to keep the residents in our community safe. While there are a number of ways that you're probably already beginning to prepare for the arrival of Hurricane Matthew, we urge you to also take a careful look at your home's alarm system, and most specifically, your alarm panel batteries.

The alarm system in your home is one of your best sources of security. While alarm panels do have backup batteries, they can easily drain in a long-term power outage that Hurricane Matthew will likely bring.

Although Florida Power and Light has made a significant investment in improving its electric grid over the past 10 years, it's still likely that the 120 mile per hour winds associated with this Category 3 hurricane will lead to a considerable power outage in our area.

Sad but true, burglars often see power outages as an opportune time to break into homes. This means maintaining your alarm system status during this state of pandemonium is especially crucial, so you can't afford to have the backup batteries in your alarm panel run out.

It's also important to note that today's alarm system backup batteries typically have a useful life of only 3 to 5 years. If you can't recall the last time that you replaced the backup batteries in your alarm system, it would be to your benefit to go ahead and replace them before you are faced with the power outages from Hurricane Matthew.

With the storm coming, J&J Security has anticipated an increased demand for batteries, which is why we have therefore ordered an additional 1,000 alarm panel batteries to best meet the needs of our customers.
